What the LED means

The RGB LED on the device reports what it is doing. It shows one thing at a time, in order of importance: a problem first, then whether you're rowing, then anything time-sensitive about a workout that just finished or is about to start, then its connection status. The one exception is when an app and the PM3 are both connected, where it alternates colours for each rather than reporting just one. The swatches below blink and fade at the real speeds, so you can hold this page next to the device and compare.

While you are rowing

LEDWhat it means
Solid green You're rowing. It turns green the moment you start pulling and stays that colour - drive and recovery alike - until you stop or the piece ends.

Just after a row

LEDWhat it means
White, brisk blink Saving your workout to the logbook, or uploading it to Strava. Normally over in well under a second.
White, slow blink Your workout has finished but hasn't been saved yet - usually because the device is still waiting on a clock to date it with. Reconnect it to Wi-Fi and it will catch up and save on its own.

Before you start

LEDWhat it means
Yellow, brisk blink You've picked a distance or time piece on the PM3's own screen. Pull the handle to begin - the LED switches to rowing green the instant you do.

When you are not rowing

LEDWhat it means
Cyan, then green, alternating Everything is connected: an app over Bluetooth and the PM3 over the cable. It alternates a full second of each colour, with no dark phase in between. This is what you want to see before a row.
Green pulse, once a second Connected to the PM3 and ready. Nothing is connected over Bluetooth yet.
Cyan pulse, once a second An app is connected over Bluetooth, but the PM3 isn't. Check the USB cable to the monitor.
Dim blue, slowly fading in and out Asleep on purpose, to save the PM3's own battery after a few minutes with nobody rowing. It breathes rather than blinks, so it reads as sleeping at a glance. It wakes up the moment an app connects or you touch the PM3.
Amber wink, every few seconds Powered on, but no PM3 attached. Check the USB cable, or that the monitor is awake.

Setting up and connecting

LEDWhat it means
Blue, slow and mostly on Waiting to be set up. Join the "PM Connector 5000 Setup" Wi-Fi network from your phone and pick your own network on the page that opens.
Blue, fast blinking Trying to join Wi-Fi. If it stays like this, the saved network is out of range or the password has changed.

Both blue states mean Wi-Fi, and the speed is what tells them apart: slow and mostly lit is waiting for you, fast is the device working. The dim blue further up means something different - it isn't trying to reach anything, it's asleep, which is why it fades in and out instead of blinking.

Needs attention

LEDWhat it means
Magenta blinking Installing a firmware update. Do not unplug it until this stops.
Red, fast flickering Something failed to start. Power it off and on again; if it comes back the same way, the logs on the Settings tab will say what.

Red only ever means this now - rowing is green, so a flickering red is never ambiguous with being mid-piece.

Rowing always comes first

Nothing else can interrupt the LED tracking a row. If Wi-Fi drops, or a Strava upload is retrying in the background, or a previous workout is still waiting to be saved, none of it switches the LED away from green while you're actually rowing - all of that just picks back up, and shows on the LED, once you stop.
